Telenovelas are known, above all else, for the epic love story that it is centered around. However, that simplified definition of a telenovela neglects another extremely important type of love reflected in telenovelas: familial love. This aspect is really well exemplified in the telenovela I am watching, All for Love on Netflix. I believe that this type of love helps to develop the characters further, especially the two protagonists.
A lot of times, it seems that the two protagonists are very stereotyped characters without much depth to them. They seem to only care about their romantic love interest and overcoming any obstacles they may be facing to finally end up together. I really like that in All for Love, both the male and female protagonists have very strong bonds and different issues with their families. Irene’s father is an alcoholic and if there’s one thing he’s consistent about, it is being unreliable. He often misses shows in which he is supposed to perform with Irene and her aspiring band. Joaquín’s mother was recently murdered by rivals from his hometown in a fire, wherein his entire house was destroyed as well. His sister was also kidnapped during the fire and he has spent months searching for her.
As a viewer, I really appreciate these aspects of the show. I personally feel so much more connected to the characters because I feel like they have qualities that any likable character in shows I’ve watched before. I know them more because of the struggles they’re going through. I am able to see their resilience, their care for others, and how pure their hearts are. Without these examples of familial love, I do not think I would be able to feel as emotional as I do about this show. It really helps to humanize the characters in the show and separate them from their love story. In any show, us as viewers want characters that we have some sort of emotional connection to. Without any emotions, how are we supposed to be invested? It would be extremely difficult to be motivated to keep watching a show if you are indifferent about what happens to the characters.
Incorporating family so seamlessly into All for Love is crucial to the show. I love Irene’s willingness to do anything for her family, even if it is dangerous or harmful to herself. Her selflessness is admirable while she is pursuing her own dream of becoming a singer. It puts it into perspective how easy it is to root for her as a character. As for Joaquín, his determination to find his sister no matter the cost adds a level of depth to his character. The viewer gets a good idea of how much he cares for everyone in his life. It is refreshing to see both characters as really good people, even outside of their relationship.
Hi Francesca,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your interpretation on what the epic love story in your telenovela means to you. As you mentioned, a telenovela's most remarkable element has to be its love story, a love story that drives the characters to overcome life's biggest adversities in the arduous fight for true love. I like how you analyze the telenovela "All for Love" through a unique perspective that brings to light the more realistic, or de ruptura, aspect of it. When reading about this telenovela, it seems like the characters are very transparent and share as much of their weaknesses as their strengths. This differs a bit from the more traditional, rosa, style where the writers seek to create characters with multiple layers and great depth of personality in an effort to create a more suspenseful plot that will leave the audience interested in each character's next steps. I agree with you in the fact that this transparency and realistic outlook in "All for Love" allows for us viewers to empathize and feel more emotionally attached to the characters. However, when reading about how Irene puts her family before herself and how Joaquin will do anything to find his sister, it makes me question the extent of their goodness because from what I've seen, there is always something controversial and unexpected that is later revealed. Every good telenovela shocks its audience with an unanticipated plot twist, and I feel that a telenovela is incomplete without a switch up on a character's role or some sort of abrupt family drama. This added drama also makes reaching their goals a lot more cumbersome but at the same time, all the more worthwhile. Therefore, I am excited to see how the relationship between these two protagonists and the issues that each family face will intertwine in later episodes to continue drafting a rich and suspenseful plot.
I really enjoyed this blog post and your astute analysis of your telenovela. I commend your ability to differentiate you telenovela from other popular ones in terms of the main character's familial relationships. My telenovela also sheds light on the protagonist's relationship with her parents, primarily her mom, and I completely agree that this has a humanizing effect, as it enables the viewer to better understand and relate to the character. In my telenovela, the protagonist holds a grudge against her mother for significant mistakes she made during her childhood, which allows watchers with similar stories to feel a bond to the character. While it is often difficult for viewers to truly relate to telenovelas, given their dramatic nature featuring extravagant love stories and often violence, the storylines involving family life surely help build the connection between the show and the audience.
