Now I’m not very big on television and watching shows, however this genre has me captivated. From when I first heard about telenovela’s until this point I never grasped how grand the spectrum actually is. Between the thousands that exist and the vast amount of storylines, it’s truly overwhelming. Each day that I attend this first year odyssey I witness the tremendous impact that these shows have on different areas of the world and their cultures, such as the creation of Turkish and Korean dramas inspired by telenovelas. My goal in writing this blog is to demonstrate the influence that telenovelas have worldwide and uncover the significance of their tropes and how they represent different kinds of people. As well as the thoughts I have on these particular things.
This isn’t only on a large scale, but on a smaller level too. In our three days of class, we’ve seen that things done in telenovelas have been duplicated by many other script writers in the world. For all we know, a certain telenovela plot line or idea could be integrated into our favorite New York Times Best Seller book, a famous television show, or even our own thoughts and mannerisms, which is fascinating. Although my observations are just observations, they will be unique information that will bring surprise and induce thoughts of how telenovelas are much more than what meets the eye. In having this goal, I’ve made the decision to challenge myself and pick one that’s a bit more candid in hopes of provoking more thoughts. As we discussed in class, every telenovela has both a love story but also a message and I hope to dig deeper into its profoundness.
Although it may seem that my goals for this blog are too sizable, I will attempt this because I believe that telenovelas are both straightforward yet almost too complex to limit to one idea. As you continue or begin to watch telenovelas, I challenge you to think of the reason each relationship and plotline is included and if there could be more to what we see. I’ve realized that regardless of the author’s intention, every scene was created with a purpose and I’m driven to uncover each one.
I really like the writing style you took with this blog, and I think that your purpose you are writing about is somewhat unique to the rest of the class and the other posts I have seen. Telenovelas are filled with massive plot twists constantly, and that is what makes them so intriguing. As a viewer, you never know what to expect in the plot, and the twists are always so shocking. I think it is interesting how you mentioned that every scene has a purpose, because some of the events in the shows are just so far out of left field that finding their purpose feels impossible. I think that at the end of the day, these crazy plot-twist scenes are just meant to keep viewers hooked and attached to the show, and to make it as entertaining as possible.
