In the past few classes we have talked about new adaptations of telenovelas, specifically ones that will now be produced in the United States. Although it is exciting that telenovelas will be introduced to a new audience and possibly produced on a larger scale it will be crucial to the success that it maintains the key aspects of Latin American telenovelas.
Before taking this first year odyssey I had no idea what defines a telenovela. I thought that the American show “Jane the Virgin’ was a true telenovela, but after the first class we learned that it is not.
Some of the most important aspects of telenovelas that must be incorporated are a love story that is to be delivered in installments, a spectacle of emotions, broadcasted 5 or 6 times a week, which is especially difficult for streaming services, and produced in 50 or more one hour episodes.
If telenovelas are produced in this matter in the United States they may see great success, if not then it will either be unsuccessful or not considered a true telenovela.
